Big Bang Fair at Redmoor Academy, Saturday 12th December 2015
What a STEM-tastic day! The third annual Big Bang fair at Redmoor academy was held on Saturday 12th December and it definitely went off with a bang!
The Big Bang is held to engage and enthuse the local community in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The event aimed to educate school pupils from the local area about these subjects and why they could be so important to their future.
After weeks of preparation and excitement at Redmoor there was a fantastic turn out of around 500 visitors to school! The whole school had been taken over by a winter wonderland of STEM where there were exhibits all over the school, from the primary engineering competition in humanities to the Vex Robotics regional competition in the gym.
There were many exhibitors from local and national companies, including Triumph, Mira, IET, Campbell Scientific, the University of Leicester and many more. The range of activities and workshops was vast, with DNA extraction in one room, to making pop rockets in another! Visitors enjoyed a pyrotechnic show in the hall with explosions and experiments from the local presenter Matthew Tosh as well as a 3D film about the Christmas night sky from Immersive Domes.
One of the huge successes of the day was the primary engineering competition. Primary school pupils from St Margaret’s in Stoke Golding and Higham on the Hill primary school competed after designing, making and testing their own Christmas buggies. The aim of the project was to engineer a buggy that could travel in a straight line for the longest time possible. The competition was close, but after numerous rounds pupils from St Margaret’s were victorious!
One of the other successes of the day was how the event itself was ran mainly by the students of Redmoor Academy. Students took on roles in the catering team, exhibitor support and became fantastic sciences buskers for the day. Many visitors commented on the professionalism and enthusiasm of the Redmoor students and exhibitors also commented on the fantastic support from the students;
“May I say how helpful and polite all the pupils were. The whole day was a great credit to the school. Please congratulate all the pupils and staff who helped to make the day a success.” IET
The excitement and enjoyment of the visitors was clear to see, and we can only thank the visitors and exhibitors for making it a very successful day!
Some quotes of feedback from the public;
“One word – EXCELLENT”
“Fantastic. I only came for the last hour, wish I had stayed all day!”
“Amazing, would love to come next year”
“It was fabulous! The students are the best!”
