Today marks 80 years since VE Day and Redmoor will be remembering this significant anniversary, a time for celebration and reflection.
In November, Ema in Year 8 wrote a poem for the Lest We Forget Young Writers' Competition. Her poem has now been published and we'd love to share it with you:
Lest We Forget
When a child asks,
Why do we wear poppies in November?
Do you tell them the truth?
The truth that we sent our families,
To a place of horror.
To a place I would hate to go.
Where the deadliest diseases were normal.
4 years,
4 seasons,
4 months,
Yet millions died.
We fought over what?
Land we don’t deserve.
And that’s not all,
We did more.
Those who didn’t die,
Were injured and traumatised,
This happened twice.
So I ask you again.
When a child asks,
Why do we wear poppies in November?
Do you tell them the truth?
Or lie in hopes they won’t ask again?
